Kinetic Typography

The kinetic typography video I chose to analyze is called "I will not let an exam result decide my fate" I chose this video because I really enjoyed the message being delivered. It really spoke to me and made me look at situations very differently. The power from the simple typography gives out a very important message.
In every kinetic typography work, there are principles of animation. In this work of kinetic typography, there are many principles of animation, examples being secondary action, timing and exaggeration. At 33 seconds of the video, a secondary action principle is shown as the speech bubble comes and pushes a line of text away. At 17 seconds of the video, the exaggeration principle is shown in the word "heated". Exaggeration in this video is a very big component because the creator wants to emphasise those words as they are very important to the message they are trying to convey. At 25 seconds of the video, Timing is shown because of the word "look". That word is turned into two solid black circles showing the timing principle. Overall, this video is amazing and the typography work was very well done.

Helvetica Movie Quotations

"The designer choosing typefaces is like a casting director choosing their actors" -Jonathan Hoefler

  This quote indicates that choosing a typeface for business purposes is just like choosing actors for a play.  If the actors are not successful, then the play will not be successful.  The same theory applies to choosing typefaces.  If the typeface you choose is not professional or matches the theme of your business, then your business will not be successful. 

In the movie, they talked about how Helvetica was commonly used in many retail chains for advertising or using it as the font for the store title. The movie also talked about how Helvetica had a simple but interesting look that attracts people to go and shop in that store. In my opinion, I do agree that Helvetica is a very nice font that is simple yet interesting, but because it is so commonly used as shown in the movie, it makes you realize that maybe Helvetica isn't the best font for what that store is advertising.  I do believe that Helvetica is a good typeface for retail advertisement but it should not be used as much because it may not match what the theme of the store is.

In conclusion, Helvetica is a good font but just because it looks professional does not mean it is. Just like Hoefler says "The designer choosing typefaces is like a casting director choosing their actors.

Tattered Seams Poster & T-Shirt Design


The photos above are my designs for the poster and T-Shirt for the Tattered Seams play. To come up with my ideas and my final product, I started my creative process by researching.  I researched circus themes and decor to inspire my designs. I also kept what the client wanted in mind while researched. As I continued the creative process, I started to sketch the ideas I had my in mind and presented to the class for an opinion from different points of view. After that, I began my actual work on the computer and as I was working my designs slightly changed here and there. This was my creative process and how I got to this final product.

The mood of the play is very gloomy and very down because of the characters and how they have rough backgrounds. The circus in the play is showed as happy but really the happiness is a cover of there rough, hard lives and backgrounds. On my T-shirt design I used the image of a circus tent and added stars to it. I put it on the ticket template because I wanted to give the showcase effect. Although my T-shirt does not reflect the play's theme of inside sadness and outside happiness, I still showed that happy/sad mood through the colors I chose. On my poster, I used a ringmaster with there arms wide open to show the plays title. I put the letters of the play's title on strings because in the play there are marionettes that are controlled by strings thus explaining the reason for the letters on the strings. The ringmaster on my poster design is also highlighting the quote of the play "This life isn't for everyone, kid". I decided to place the quote there because in that spot of the poster, it gives it a more powerful look. Finally, I put the yellow circles around the poster as a border. The circles are suppose to be lights and also giving my poster the "showcase" effect. The dates, ticket prices, details, quote and title of the play for the play were put in white font because it stood out perfectly from the black

As I was working on my poster, my technical process included working on Adobe Illustrator, using images from online and downloaded fonts. To create my poster and T-shirt design I worked on Adobe Illustrator. To create the ticket shape on my T-shirt design, I outline a photo of a ticket with the pen tool. I used this same outline technique on the tent (T-shirt design), the ringmaster (poster design) and the stars (T-shirt design). After completing the outlines for all my images for my poster, I then played around with colors that matched and fit the circus theme. I found all the colors that I used on a photo of a circus sign on Pinterest. Some difficultys I had making my designs was on the poster. I had a hard time figuring out how thin or thick each of the marianette strings had to be. How I over came this was making the background of my poster black because it made the strings look thick but also thin. It balanced the strings. Another struggle I had was on my T-shirt outlining the stars. The stars had to be the same sizes and same design in order for it to match as it was on both sides on the tent. I overcame this by making the stars on side and to make sure I had the exact same group of stars in the other side, I copy and pasted it but I reflected the stars.

Overall, I am extremely satisfied with both of my designs. I am very satisfied because I feel like I took what somebody wanted and made it into something. I do think that I met the clients needs but more in my poster than my T-shirt design. The reason being my T-shirt was very vague and could have been about any circus because of the tent just being there. On my poster, I feel like it was more highlighted that the play was about Tattered Seams and it was more get to the point and when you look at it, you know what it is about. I learned a new technique that made my work go much faster. I learned that instead of picking a color you want to fill in a shape, you can simply take the sample color tool and fill it in. Meaning, instead of making the color you need, you just simply sample it with that tool and it's there.
